Summer Classes at Studio Arts are magic! Keep a weekly routine with one or two classes and make some artistic connections. Projects are designed to be adaptable to your travel schedule. Also priced to miss twice, so feel free to jet around the world. Once you land, we will catch you up on anything you missed. No makeups or prorating in summer, only fall/spring.

Many parents tell us that Studio Arts is their teen’s home away from home. For teens, projects can be individualized per their interests/requirements or we are prepared to direct! Our greatest achievements at Studio Arts lie in helping teens meet lofty art goals through serious study.

Summer 2021 Classes will be offered both on Zoom or In Person! Choose your format! Our artist instructors are great at teaching art on Zoom! Join a faraway friend for art class. Supply lists will be included with each class so your child has all the materials to make awesome projects.

Drawing & Painting

If you are always drawn to pick up a pencil, don’t brush off your painting skills! Draw from still life (but really COOL still life), clothed models (sometimes the studio dog) and work from your imagination while learning important stuff like proportion, perspective, composition and hatching/cross hatching to add value. Supplies and model fees included.

Wheel & Hand-build Clay

Making awesome stuff from mud is nothing short of miraculous. The process is as simple as you need it to be and the challenges are very exciting. Throwing on the potter’s wheel can really get you centered. Hand building sculpture and dinnerware is a perfect meditation. You will be amazed at how quickly your skills develop. Please note that all clay must be picked up within two weeks of the class end or find your clay in the clay garden!

Young Illustrator

Do you LOVE drawing in pen and pencil? In fact, are you pretty much addicted to it? You might be headed for a career in illustration! Take any good book as your subject matter and discover new ways to express characters/action/place/style. This class is sort of a book club for drawing geeks. We also support future advertising artists, game creators, and manga masters here. Illustration, you know!

Portfolio Classes

Pre-Portfolio, Portfolio Class, Post-Portfolio, for Admission to Booker T. Washington HSPVA, and College Portfolio Prep classes are all available. For 25 years our studio has supported teens as they create individualized portfolios to prepare to audition for Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, other local high schools and first-choice colleges and art schools. Pre-Portfolio starts in February – it’s the class for seventh through ninth graders interested in pursuing Portfolio class which begins in June for Booker T. hopefuls. In February, we offer Post-Portfolio class for those students who want to continue on with their Portfolio tribe. Our College Portfolio class continues to grow by leaps and bounds. Barley Vogel, Studio Arts director, has created a safe space that allows art students to gather as they build relationships and continue their transformation into creative, successful, young-adult working artists.

Please visit our Portfolio Series page for detailed information! Email Barley Vogel at for info.

The Art of Photography

The Art of Photography Class

This class will cover all the photo basics while exploring the artistic side of photography. Students will simultaneously receive the foundational skills they need while experimenting with alternative processes of photo making (think cyanotypes!). Photo basics like composition, light, and color will be covered as well, but we’ll be playing with common household items to manipulate the lens and produce some truly unique imagery.

This class is perfect for someone feeling stuck in their creative photography practice or if you want to learn more techniques to grow your photography work. Let’s take a look at photography through a different lens!

Animation/Video Class Bring your drawings and/or sculptures to life! Do you love watching movies and falling into a deep meditation? This class will have short animation viewings that will alternate with short lessons and technical demonstrations for making 3D stop – motion and hand-drawn animated films. After exploring both ways of making, you will be able to apply your new skills towards your final short animated film! Experimental to narrative styles invited as you sharpen your observation and muscle memory. In this class, we will also learn the art of storyboarding, editing techniques, lighting techniques, collecting sounds, and how to import them to sync up with your film (Silent films are also welcome!). At the end of the semester, we will have a viewing party where members of your family and friends can hop on to our zoom call and watch all of the work you made together! The materials you need for this class -pencils, pens/colored pencils/markers/paints/pastels/watercolors (not all are mandatory as we can work with what you have or decide on what you want to make your animation with later on) paper (can be printer paper), any camera ( iPhone works great!), and access to a computer or laptop or iPad.
